The Day After Apple Pie Shakeology

The day after Thanksgiving, at my house, is a day filled with left overs.  Pies, pies and more pies.  For someone who is trying to eat healthy this can be a big temptation.

Normally, I am a chocolate or cafe latte drinker.  But I will make an exception for this one. Unsweetened applesauce and cinnamon make this Shakeology smoothie taste like apple pie filling with whipped cream.  It’s even better with home made applesauce which is super easy to make and well worth it. To make this shake even more delicious, add a dash of ground ginger and ½ tsp. of pure caramel extract.

I say skip the apple pie and drink this instead.

Core De Force...Results from the First 11 Days

This morning I woke up to Day 12 of my journey with Core De Force. It was time to see if what I was doing was working. I felt different and I knew that I was getting results but I still wanted to see what the measurements said.
I mean, non scale victories this week including being able to wear a pair of jeans that I haven't worn in a long time. They are skinny jeans and I always felt horrible in them. I have worn them this week and was amazed that they are actually a little loose in the abs YAY!
I stepped on the scale I saw 188.6. I started this weighing 190.8. So then it was time to take some measurements.
Chest was 41 inches now 39.75
Left arm was 12 inches now 11.5
Right arm was 12.5 inches now 11.75
Waist was 38.75 inches now 37.5
Hips was 42.5 inches now 41.75
Left Thigh was 23 inches now 21.75
Right Thigh was 23 inches now 21.75
Body fat was 36% now 34%

So a total of 2.2 lbs lost and 7 inches! Needless to say I am very happy with my results so far. I honestly don't know how I would do if it wasn't for the support of some of my amazing challengers. It is so nice to have other ladies going through this with me. The support and motivation is awesome. It keeps me pushing play!
Thanks for the accountability ladies!

Stop Comparing Yourself to Other Coaches

For a long time I did not believe that I would ever be a good coach. I truly believed that I was NOT successful and at times I struggled with whether or not I should even give up coaching altogether. I felt like I just wasn't good enough. Have you ever felt that way?

You see, I made a huge mistake. I started comparing myself and my journey to that of other coaches. I would see them and think... I spend so much time trying to be a good coach. I run tons of challenge groups. I share my story in every raw, emotional detail. I was only getting 3-4 hours of sleep each night so that I could jump on every training call and I did countless hours of training on my own. I felt like I wasn't successful because I wasn't growing my team as fast as they were. I wasn't losing my weight as quickly as they were. I made myself sick with how much I compared myself to them. 😞  And I allowed it to steal the joy I had found in coaching.

But I realized that in order for me to be successful and truly happy with being a Beach body coach I HAD to STOP comparing myself to the top coaches.  This is my journey and I had to run my own race.  That meant I had to take a long hard look at my own journey and you know what?  I found my success!

My success isn't in how much money I make.  My success isn't in what rank I am at.  My success isn't in how big my team is.  It's NOT even in whether or not I have a team leader to get my training from.  My SUCCESS starts with me and my challengers!  ðŸ˜‰

EVERY time I have a challenger share with me about how their clothes fit better or that they have come closer to reaching their goal...SUCCESS!

EVERY time I choose to workout instead of sitting on my couch...SUCCESS!

EVERY time I choose to eat a healthy meal instead of binge eating a bag of potato chips...SUCCESS!

EVERY time I choose to remain focused and positive instead of dwelling on what I think that I don't have or being jealous over someone else's journey....well, that is a SUCCESS too!

It's a choice.  Your happiness is found when you choose to stop comparing yourself to other people.  Then you can focus on how truly great you really are.  It's all about being confident.

Too many days are wasted comparing ourselves to others and wishing to be something we aren't.  Everybody has their own strengths and weaknesses, and it is only when you accept, everything you are and everything you aren't, that you will truly succeed in life.  ~ Ritu Ghatourey

Remember to believe in yourself, stay strong and take time to fly!

Time to Get My 22 Minute Hard Corps Challenge Coin

I am at the point where I am asking myself....what's next?

I am only on day 8 of my 21 Day Fix Extreme journey, but I am looking forward and trying to figure out what is next.  Whether it is what is next for a workout program, or how can I make my groups better, or what do I want to do now that the kids are grown?  How can I improve?

If you had asked me yesterday what program I would do next....well it was simple, I had decided to do Body Beast.  I wanted to conquer the beast!  :)

But things started to change yesterday afternoon for me.  We had an Army Sergeant come to the house for a last minute visit to answer any of our questions before Zachary leaves.  That made things very REAL for me.  Zachary is leaving on Monday for Basic Military Training at Ft Benning in Georgia.  Wow! Where did the time go? Sergeant Britton told us that hotels book up quickly for BMT graduation so I need to make sure to book as soon as I can.  Of course, I have already started scoping out some hotels in the area, which got me thinking about when I went to San Antonio with Kaitlyn to watch Alex graduate. It was an amazing experience.
One of the things that I remember most when I saw Alex graduate was the ceremony where they received their challenge coin.  "A challenge coin is a small coin or medallion traditionally given to prove membership when challenged and to enhance morale."  There are a few stories surrounding the origination of the challenge coin, but all I know is that they are a point of pride.

In the military, Challenge Coins aren't given away, they're earned by doing something meaningful. To own one is proof that you have been tested and shown yourself worthy of membership in an elite and exclusive group.  Challenge coins have become a trademark for military tradition and pride.  :)

So why did I just talk about challenge coins?  I have decided to show pride and honor my son by stepping up and doing Tony Horton's 22 Minute Hard Corps program.  For 8 weeks I will be giving it my ALL boot camp style.  I love that this program has actual military vets sweating it up with Tony as the drill sergeant.

THIS Army/Air Force mom is going to EARN her own Challenge Coin starting on August 3rd!

Isn't it time you EARNED your CHALLENGE COIN?

Can You Truly Get Results from 21 Day Fix Extreme? Check Out My Week 1 Results

After doing one week of the 21 Day Fix Extreme, I wanted to share my results so far. This round has been so different from my last. In my last round in three weeks, I lost 2% of my body fat, I lost 4.52 lbs of fat, I lost 8.75 inches and I gained 1.52 lbs of muscle.
Now....after ONLY one week I have already lost more of my body fat and gained more muscle. This is amazing to me. This just goes to show what following the program to the T and getting even an hour more sleep a night does. The results that I have seen in one week just go to show me that I am finally on the right track.  Fourteen more days to go!

Foods to Avoid If You Have Hypothyroidism

I am finding out that there is so much that I do not know about my thyroid condition.  I have hypothyroidism, I was diagnosed about 5 years ago and I am supposed to take Levothyroxine daily for it.  My problem is that with my new insurance I had to find a new doctor, so I have not had any of my medication for months.  My doctor’s appointment isn’t for another month. So I have been doing some research to find out all that I can about this, what I should eat etc.

I have found that there are certain foods that I should be avoiding or limiting. I am still researching this, so please don't take my word for it. Verify it!

One of them is soy.   I don’t think that will be a problem unless there is hidden soy in the food that I am eating.  I guess I will need to check that out.

I eat a lot of veggies but found that people with hypothyroidism may want to limit their intake of broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, turnips, and bok choy.  I love broccoli and brussel sprouts so this one may be a little more of a challenge. If you cook these veggies than it can reduce the effect that they have on the thyroid gland.  So I need to make sure to limit myself to no more than 5 ounces a day.  I can do that.  I admit this kind of confuses me so I have a lot of research to do.  Broccoli and cauliflower has selenium in it, which is good for your thyroid.  So I guess in moderation it is ok.  LIke I said I am still learning about this.  :)

I have found that people with thyroid issues should limit their intake of gluten.  Apparently gluten can irritate your small intestine which can interfere with the absorption of your thyroid medicine.  Wow, I have been taking meds for my thyroid for many years and I have never been told that.  If you are going to continue eating gluten, then make sure to take your meds a couple of hours before you eat anything with gluten in it.

Did you know that fatty foods can interfere with your thyroid’s ability to produce hormone?  Some professionals recommend that you don’t eat fried food and reduce the amount of fat you eat from butter, mayo, margarine and fatty cuts of meat.

Your metabolism is slowed down because of the hypothyroidism.  That makes it easy to put on the weight, and from experience I can tell you that it is so difficult to lose it because of the slow metabolism.  So of course, that means reducing or avoiding sugary foods, they have lots of calories and no nutritional value.  I think it is time for me to cut back on my sugar intake.

Did you know that people with an underactive thyroid have an increased risk for high blood pressure? Too much sodium from processed foods can increase that risk. So you should read the nutrition label to find food that is low in sodium.

I always thought that getting a lot of fiber was good for me. Little did I know that if you get to much it can complicate my hypothyroidism treatment. You should only get 25-30 mg each day. The amounts of fiber from whole grains, veggies, fruits, beans and legumes that are above that level can affect the digestive system and interfere with medication absorption.  Wow, another one that I have to start thinking about more.

I wasn’t very happy to find that caffeine has been found to block thyroid medication absorption. I used to take my meds with my morning coffee.  Not a great idea. People who have taken their meds with their coffee have been shown to have uncontrollable thyroid levels. So you should only take your meds with water. And it is recommended to wait at least 30 minutes AFTER you take your meds before you have a cup of coffee.

I don’t know about you but I know I have some homework to work on.  I need to cut back on my sugar intake.  If it is more than 5g per serving I am going to cut it out. I need to look into cutting back or cutting out gluten from my diet.  I’m not sure where to begin with this so I really need to start researching. AND as much as I hate to think about doing this, I think it is time to cut out coffee again or at least cut back on how much I drink each day.  Oh my so many changes, but it’s going to be all about the baby steps with this one.  Trying to make too many changes at once would just be setting myself up for failure and I truly don't want that.  Even small changes will be a help right?   A work in progress.

I have so much research to do. :)

Why I Share My Beachbody Journey

Have you ever looked at some of the pictures on social media and wondered to yourself...what were they thinking?  Why on earth would they share that?  That is so personal.

For the last two years I have been one of the people that has shared most of her life on social media.  Not just the great photos of my kids and sporting events, or family functions, but those embarrassing bikini photos, the photos of my eating, the photos of me sweating like a pig, with no makeup on.  Ugh!
But the question is why?  WHY?  Why share something that makes me tremble and my insides turn to jelly when I am getting ready to hit the submit button?  Why show people what I look like without layers of clothes on?  Why show others how imperfect that I am, how much I fail daily?

I wish I could say that the reason is simple, but it's not.  When I first started my journey, it was because I wanted the accountability.  I put those nasty photos out there so that I would have motivation to change things up.  I needed to change.  I wanted to be able to keep up with my kids at sporting events.  I didn't want THEM to be embarrassed by their obese mom.

Two years later, things have definitely changed.  I am a work in progress still and I have lost some weight, toned things up and I can actually breathe when going for a walk.  My reason for coaching has changed too.

It seems so sleazy to say I want to help people.  How many times have you heard that before?  But the truth is...I do!  BUT at the same time that I am helping others I will be helping myself as well.

When I run a challenge group,  it holds my challengers accountable, gives them motivation and ideas BUT the biggest benefit is that I am being held accountable as well.  I mean, if I am NOT walking the walk, who is going to listen to anything that I say.  I am not perfect though.  I have had times when I thought, wow, I just finished this program, had amazing results and now I can eat all of the crap I want.  Why not, it's not like I can't do the program again.  So my mindset was not where it actually needed to be, now was it?

Growing up I was a victim, I allowed myself to remain a victim as an adult and I fell into a huge black hole.  I was depressed, I felt worthless, I felt completely out of control and I hated it.  Now, I am gaining back my control.  I am learning that I am NOT worthless and sometimes, well I still battle depression.  Nothing in life is perfect right?  It's a work in progress.

So how am I finding my worth, getting over my fears and taking back control?  By sharing my journey with other women (some men).  I show them that there is a way to dig out of the darkness and step into the light.  I know that sounds like a cliche.

The one thing that I am in complete control over is me.  I am in control over whether or not I work out, what I eat, whether I allow myself to remain a victim or become a beast who overcomes everything.  I want to share this with others. I know how being sexually abused feels.  I know how being in the dark feels BUT I also know how being full of energy and coming together with other women (and men) who love themselves enough to work out and take care of their bodies feels.

I admit that I am a horrible sales person.  I don't make the ladies in my groups buy Beachbody products.  NOT because I don't believe they work, I KNOW they do, BUT because I know that there are many ways that do work.  And as long as we are all on the same journey does it matter if you are doing the 21 Day Fix Extreme with me or doing your own program?  We are all trying to get healthy right?

Now, with that said, let me say that I don't know why ANYONE who is trying to get healthy doesn't use a Beachbody program.  I mean, they take all of the guess work out of it.  There is NO question to what workout you will do on any specific day, it is spelled out for you.  There is  NO question about what you should eat, it is spelled out for you.  They make it simple to get healthy.  Sure it costs money, but so does any other workout, shake or gym membership.  I have spent money on all of it and you see what I am still doing.  That speaks volumes.  I am not giving up on this approach because IT WORKS FOR ME!

When I first started coaching I was so gung ho about advancing in rank, making lots of money etc, that sometimes I would forget why I started.  Coaching to me IS NOT ABOUT THE RANK, MONEY OR SUCCESS CLUB POINTS.  Coaching to me is ALL ABOUT HELPING OTHERS GAIN THEIR FREEDOM FROM NASTY UNHEALTHY HABITS, TO TAKE BACK CONTROL, TO EMPOWER THEM AND SHOW THEM THAT THEY ARE WORTH IT!  To learn how to become healthy and treating their bodies right by working out and changing their eating habits.  I also firmly believe in reading books to help you with your mindset.  To get you out of the negativity and show you how to love you for you.

Thanks Beachbody!

I am trying to get rid of the negative energy that has been surrounding me this past month.  I figured that the best way to do that is to share something that I am thankful for.  Of course I am thankful for my daughter, but this post is about SO much more than that!

I am thankful to Carl Daikeler and Beachbody today.  You have absolutely NO idea why and that is ok.  Let me explain.  Being a Beachbody coach is about changing lives right?  RIGHT!  I work with others on their physical transformations BUT there is a lot more to it than just the physical side.  We also work on mental transformations.  Changing how you feel about things, what you focus on.  Thankfully this is not just for my clients BUT for myself as well.

Beachbody has given Kaitlyn and me something to share besides being related.  We are BOTH coaches! <3  Last year I was blessed that Kait and I were able to go to our FIRST Coach Summit in Nashville and we had an amazing time.  We were able to meet other coaches, who have become closer than some family members, from our team.  Had a great time bonding with her over something that I am very passionate about.  <3 <3 <3

Once again, Kait and I will meet in Nashville for ANOTHER coach summit and I am so excited!  I leave in 22 days!!!!  We will work out with Autumn Calabrese AGAIN and meet up with a lot of other coaches!  It is such an amazing time.  I love being surrounded by all of the love and positivity from the other coaches.

Anyhow, long story trying to be short, thank you Beachbody and Carl  for not only giving me an outlet to help other women achieve their goals BUT for also giving me the opportunity to see my beautiful daughter.  This is our yearly visit and I just wanted to say thank you for making it happen.

Next year, we should have summit somewhere tropical what do you think?  lol

21 Day Fix Extreme Results

Last night I got 14 hours of sleep!  Can you imagine? lol  I decided it was time to share my results from this round of the 21 Day Fix Extreme.  I am going to be doing another round for anyone who is interested in joining me.   Before I share my results, I wanted to share some things that happened to me during this round.

Not only did I have a lot of stress from my youngest son graduating from high school and knowing that he will be leaving for the military in less than a month.  I also had some major changes in my sleep schedule because of work.  I have been getting about 3 hours of sleep at night before work, going to do my 8 hour shift and then sleeping for an hour or so when I get home before I do my workout.

I keep telling everyone in my groups how important nutrition is, how important drinking enough water is, and how important working out is.  The one thing that I easily overlook is how much sleep you should get.

I found from various studies that a lack of sleep can slow your metabolism.  This is something I really don't need because I have hypothyroidism.  A lack of sleep also increase your feelings of hunger.  Ugh!

So between my thyroid issues and lack of sleep this last 21 days has not been exactly what I had hoped for.  But it is ok because I now know that I need to get more sleep.  I have made a commitment to myself and to a fellow coach and friend to increase my sleep little by little each night.  :)  I am working on that.

I have also made a commitment to keep a bullet journal every day.  I admit that yesterday with work and hiking with Zach, I neglected my journal but I am starting fresh today and I will do it!  The next round is going to be different.

BUT even with the setbacks I still lost:

I lost 2% of my body fat!
I lost 4.52 lbs of fat!
I lost 8.75 inches!
I gained 1.52 lbs of muscle!

This is just the beginning.  My next round starts on June 27th! If your looking for some accountability then let's talk!

Can You Eat Too Much Watermelon?

I woke up with the insane craving for watermelon.  I'm not talking about wanting just a few bites, I am talking about having to eat a lot of it.  An overwhelming feeling of needing to it.  If I didn't know any better I would think that I was pregnant.  Which of course...I AM NOT!  lol

Ok, so I know what you are thinking. You are saying to yourself that it is JUST watermelon and watermelon is HEALTHY. It's GOOD for you.  It's NOT like I am craving chocolate, or ice cream, or even chips right?  Watermelon vs junk food.

They say that if you have cravings for watermelon, whether you are pregnant or not, it means that you are lacking certain nutrients. And that is why you are having the craving.

There are good and bad side effects from eating too much watermelon.

It is fat-free and is a good source of Vitamins A, B6, and C. It also contains potassium, lycopene and citrulline.  It can lower blood pressure and aids in the function of organs.  It can also benefit the heart and circulation. It can also enhance the libido ;)

But if you eat too much of it then it can cause nausea, vomiting, bloating, indigestion, irregular heartbeat, weak or absent pulse, in the extreme it can cause cardiac arrest.  It can also elevate blood sugar and triglyceride levels.

I am learning that it does not matter what you are eating, good or bad food, you still have to watch your portions.  A healthy diet has balance, variety and moderation.

Don't put a ban on your favorite foods. Enjoy the foods you love in moderation.  Getting fit isn't a punishment.

Are You Struggling?

Are you struggling with what to eat? Let's be real for a moment.  I know a lot of people and I mean a lot, who say they exercise every day but they can't figure out why they haven't started toning up.  They still have their belly flab.  I will admit that I was just like them.

So, now my first question to them is what are you eating?  It doesn't matter who you are, it doesn't matter what you are doing for workouts, if you are not watching what you put in your mouth, you will not see the results that you want to see.

Just because you (or me), workout hard and are sweating like you just stepped out of the shower, doesn't mean that you get to have a giant piece of chocolate cake.  Do you really think you will get trim and toned that way?  No!

So, what do I have to do?  I work out hard every day.  That doesn't mean going for a leisurely stroll, that means breaking a sweat, getting your heart rate up.  Ok?  Check.  Next step, I log.  I log everything that I do,  I log everything that I eat and I log everything that I drink.  Drink?  Yes, drink!  Drinks can be a downfall if you are not careful.  Just because something says it is a diet soda does not mean it is good for you.

Ok, so maybe you are not sure what is good for you and what is not.  Let's face it, there have been a lot of fad diets saying no carbs, no fat, tons of protein, eat all the bacon you want etc.

Send me a message and let's talk.  I spent so much time struggling with my nutrition that it boggles the mind. Now, I have simplified it and between my logging, meal plans and prep, plus my containers, life is much easier for me.  I am starting to get the lasting results that I want, and all because I changed how I viewed what was in my kitchen and my workouts.

Thank you so much for the support and your interest in this blog!  If you haven't already please make sure t check out Darlene Caron Health and Fitness Coach where you can find more recipes, fitness tips, motivation and information on upcoming Health and Fitness Challenge groups that I offer.

End Your Affair

End Your Affair with Food.

Hi I'm Darlene, food addict and emotional eater.

One sign of emotional eating is when you feel driven to eat.  It's not that you see the cookie sitting on the counter and decide you want it; it's when you actually go searching for the cookie because you feel you really need it.

It can be a desperate feeling, you have to have that cookie RIGHT NOW!  Or it can be just a case of the munchies because you have that small feeling somewhere that something is wrong.

IT really doesn't matter, because the outcome is the same.

I have spent many years in a constant battle with food.  It has become all important to me.  At first, I ate mindlessly.  I would eat so much that I would make myself sick.  Then after I was sick, I would eat some more.  I would eat until my stomach was bloated and hurt so much.  I would eat even though inside my head I was telling myself to stop.  It was an all consuming addiction.

It was how I dealt with being sexually abused, with having an abortion, with having my loved ones leave, any kind of stress or emotion that came up, I would eat.

Now, I am ready to gain freedom from my emotional eating.  To take control of it.  On May 30th I am starting an End Your Affair Emotional Eating Support Group.  If you would like more information or would like to join please comment below or send me a message.

You Have to Eat to Lose

Truth is...I have been too lazy! :(
Have you ever heard the saying you have to eat to lose? Even after almost two years of doing Beachbody programs I still struggle with this one. For the last couple of months I have struggled with my journey. I haven't been eating what I should, I blamed it on being too busy, too much stress but the truth is I was just being too lazy!
When the scale started going up, even though I tell everyone NOT to pay attention to the scale because it isn't your friend, I started eating less. I went back to the mindset that you have to eat less to lose weight. There were days when I would go all day without eating and then at supper time I would eat something quick which wasn't anything healthy for me. Then of course there were the days I would eat my emotions too. Even though I may not have been eating a lot I was eating quick fixes which were pretty much the wrong choices.
The sad part is that I know what to eat. I know how much I should eat but I was letting excuses get in my way. You know, the same ones that I always do. It doesn't take that long to prep my meals for the day so that excuse is not going to work. The stress in my life....well I always have stress in my life, but I know how to deal with it now, so using that for an excuse is not going to work either.
In the last two days, I have started using my 21 Day Fix containers AGAIN. I have started planning my meals for the day AGAIN. I have started eating healthy AGAIN. I have been doing TurboFIre and giving my workout 100%! And guess what?!?! I feel so much better already AND the scale has started going down AGAIN! The inches are already coming off my waist AGAIN!
WHY? Because you have to fuel your body with the right foods. That and daily exercise will get me exactly where I want to be. So I need to stop sabotaging myself and just do what I know works!
I would like to invite you to join me in my upcoming accountability group #DreamBody Bootcamp. This group is starting on May 23. The only requirement for this group is to be signed up with me or one of my coaches.
Although a Beachbody program is NOT required to be a part of this group, I want to be totally up front with you. I know for a fact that you CAN lose weight without one of the Beachbody programs BUT I also know that when I tried it was so much harder. The programs have everything laid out for you so there is no guess work. If you follow the programs the way they have been designed you WILL get healthy, you WILL lose weight and your nutrition WILL change.
If your still not sure then you have an opportunity to check it out for FREE! Let the programs speak for themselves. You will not be disappointed.
If you would like to join the group, talk over your options or want to know how you can try a program for FREE, contact me on facebook, send me an email at darlenecaronfitness@gmail.com or click the link below to be taken to the #DreamBody bootcamp event invite.

My Ultimate Reset Journey Day 4 -6

I will admit that this post is majorly late but I have been so tired that when I get home from work I immediately fall into bed.  My head still hurts but not as much as it did before.  Boy am I ever thankful for that.

My body aches a little.  It almost feels like I am getting the flu and I feel completely rundown but I have been told that is from the toxins being released from my systems.  All I know is that it is in no way as bad as it was the first time I did this almost a year ago.  That kind of has me worried though.  Does that mean I am not doing something right and the toxins are not being released or does it mean that I am not as unhealthy as I was last year?

I'm not sure which one I am hoping to be the true reason.  :)

Because I haven't been feeling the best I really haven't done a lot of personal development reading lately.

Bible: I have read Day 6 Matthew 20-23 More Parables of the King  and Day 7 Something Old, Something New, Reflection and Worship

I have been eating the same meals.

Tropical Oatmeal for Breakfast
Chocolate Shakeo with Pineapple for Snack
Quinoa Salad for Lunch
Black Beans and Rice, Sweet Potato and Quinoa for dinner on Day 4
Stir Fry and Quinoa for dinner on Day 5  Yum :)
Southwest Taco Wraps on Day 6

I can't wait to see my measurements and the number on the scale this week.   I really need to see those numbers going down to prove to myself and to my husband that the body aches and headache is really worth it.
